Curatorial positions of site specific Performance and action in public space
With Dovrat Meron (IL)

It is impossible to ignore the constant growing interest of art institution in performance art and public art. Both elusive, dynamic and cross medial. It makes a great challenge to curate and commission site specific performance in institutional context moreover when it is performed live.

There is a very lively discourse evolving the role of curators and very interesting voices of art curators commenting on Site specific work coming from the visual art and performing arts (theatre & dance)
Throughout the festival I will hand out questionnaires about the experience of performers /curators in working in Public spaces.

I wish to invite Escape participants, artists, curators, organisers and the public to reflect on this topic through their experience.

The Master Program "Space Strategies" at the weißensee Art School Berlin focus on interdisciplinary art in public spaces and weaves practice and theory. Dovrat ana Meron is a performance artist and a curator. www.dovratmeron.de
The discussion is part of her master research Curatorial positions of site specific and action in public space.

The Street Artist SP38 designed the Logo for the Escape Festival. His actions accompany the whole of the Festival with his Escape-rabbit campaign: a postering action, before, during and after.) Like rabbits , posters are everywhere in the city ...and they multiply themselves , endless ...no way to escape , escape from no way ?

The Raft builders of the Bootschaft e.V. organization built the Raft „Wackelberry“ which will be restyled by berlin artists and jouth groups into a „refugees raft“.

A Symposium of the international guests, as well as the Berlin artists, provides an opportunity for the Press and Public to get to know each other and pose questions about working processes, and political and cultural conditions and challenges in different areas of the world outside of the actual Performances..

Performer-Stammtisch, („the regulars table“, a german term borrowed from the realm of gastronomy), juxtoposes artiistic positions and live performances about the international Live-Art and Performance-Art Scene. Since being Founded in 2005, it has developed into a regular meeting point for both Berlin and International Performance Artists. Between 15 and 50 artists and interessted guests come to the monthly meetings in Berlin.

Saskia Edens reflects the whole room as well as her public with her mirrored costume. Minimal movements transform the reflections of the room into motion, you could even say, into fluidity. The images resemble a discovery voyage into space with creatures distorted by this mirroring.Standing in opposition to one another, each face melts into the other. What does one see from the other? And what does one see from him/herself in the others?

Visual and performance artist Travis McCoy Fuller combines live sound performance and live action performance with drawings, wall painting, printed Art and the construction of experimental instruments. His works have been shown extensively in the USA, Europe and in South America

The Performance, „ al-ways-this-be-yond“ by Frederic Krauke accompanied by the sounds of Mathieu Sylvestre combines interactive Performance, Experimental Theater and Noise. The core of the plot is the human essence in relation to the body and the excessiveness of the „this“ and the „hereafter“

Julie Jaffrenou dedicates herself in her artistic work, „Red Carnation“, with the help of tools and materials, to the spiritual discrepancy between the biologicaly human and the deformed human body, through genetic or through physical tampering or manipulation.

The Skulptor, Performance and Installation Artist Poul.R.Weile offers us his Performance, „The Art of Dying/Flying (slowly)“. His work mirrors not only the challenge of once again comprehending art, but also re-examines the place of Art as a space for communication and community discourse.

The Video Installation, „Flight to the Reunion- absconding to a dreamy paradies“ from Pia Fernandez (Spain) will be viewable throughout the duration of the Festival days at BLO-Ateliers

Alfredo Sciuto (Italy/Berlin), conceptualized a walk-in installation; it´s animated and fragile form is supported and maintaind merely by air presure.

Non Grata (Diverse Universe, Estonia), is certainly one of the most internationally recognized Artistic Collectives in existence. The group has performed world wide with its „Getto Marathons“,and provokes the established world of art and mass media with their radical commitment to ignorance. Non Grata has existed as a Performance group in Estonia since 1998 and has since then emerged into being one of the most respected artistic collectives out of the Baltic States. The group is comprised of about 40 members of diverse nationality, and all of them perform in the context of non Grata anonymously.

Crystal Tits presents their new performance „Common Chorion“: The rare form of one-egged twins, Siamese twins, occurs when the egg cells fail to devide completely after the 13th day after conception. It is understood, that Siamese twins are capable of seeing with the eyes and of reading the thoughts of one another. In many cases it is not clear to differentiate where the body of the one leaves off and the body of the other begins. How can people who have a doubled identity with ther own body understand this phenomenon?

The Performances of the Artist, Gwendoline Robin touch upon existential questions. She unveils with her actions, which have an affect upon an extreme form of sensitivity, the poetry of the moment.

Katastrofen will be performed by Juana and Leire, ...two people who are neither high nor low, fat nor thin, very smart nor very dumm, but who have developed a sence of Humor and Horror. And in this spirit, they are laughing over themselves for 5 years, in theater pieces, at street parties, and also in the streets.

The Italian Performance group Teatro Cinque, under the long term direction direction of Irina Galli presents their performance „Fabre Mots“, (Fabre´s Words, using less know writings from the renowned choreographer Jan Fabre), -athleltical dance-theater combining poetry and video art.The relationship between word, picture, action and the abstraction of gesture melts together with unusual expressive results

The Artist Philip Luddite dedicates his many years of performance experience to human transformation processes in the chaos of the world. Fueled by the collective consciousness as well as universal Symbols, Traditions and Rituals, he penetrates with his,, „it´s all in your head“, into the subconscious of humankind.

The performance stromboli_terra di dio of Luna Winter is a kind of self-test which plays with a system of temporary inconsistencies. It is an interweaving of timelines and a headlong dive into existing worlds in order to dissolve them through interplays and invoke a new creation. As “Pool-based”, they are determinations and it is through artifice that their liberation is embodied.
